Two Thumbs DOWN!!

I just turned the channel on my TV. I've had enough of the news. I don't usually listen to the news as I like to keep my thoughts positive, though occasionally I do listen to it if I'm here on the computer.

Steven Harper just bailed out Chrysler Corporation. He just spent $4 BILLION of tax payers money buying 2% of Chrysler to bail them out of bankruptcy. I am NOT impressed. I will not be at all surprised to hear that the big bosses at Chrysler get a big bonus &/or raise, then if there's any money left they'll put it towards helping the company stay above water.

There are SOOO many people living far below the poverty line, who can't afford to eat a healthy diet because they are just too poor to do so, and they get no help. Instead the money is spent to bail out the rich that have mismanaged the moneys they've had.

Swine Flu

Just heard on the TV news that an elementary school here has been closed for a week or so. A little girl going to school there has the swine flu. They're saying others will likely have contacted it too. BC has now got a total of 11 cases, Canada 34... 13 countries, 265 cases. Mexico is still the worst.

They say that here the H1N1 virus (commonly called Swine Flu) is not any worse than other flues here, and they are not sure why it's so bad in Mexico.

Washing hands is apparently important in heading off the spread of the virus. We are in the end of the flu season, so they say, so the problem should be over soon. I have no worries about this flu. I haven't had a flu or cold in many years, so believe this does not effect me in any way.

There are two kinds of people in the world: those who make excuses and those who get results. An excuse person will find any excuse for why a job was not done, and a results person will find any reason why it can be done. Be a creator, not a reactor.

Three Word Thursday #12

Each week, Quilly gives us three words to write into a story. Oh, they're not just any words, not words you'd hear/see ever day. Nope, these are obscure words, endangered words. Before we can write to these words, we have to find them on the internet so as to find out their meaning so they can be used properly. This week's words are:

Click on the words above for the definitions.

She lay in the grass just beside the woods, rather much under a tree, crying her eyes out when she heard a deep male voice, "May I be of service to you Madame?" Looking up through the blur of her tears, Kate blinked a few times, then saw him. He sat on top of a large, white horse with a strange looking bridle and saddle, and stranger yet was that the sun was glinting off the metal that clothed every inch of his long body.

"Hey, who are you?" she queried, then added "And what's with the horse? Don't you know there's a law against horses in the parks? Their hooves can cut holes in the grass... and they could shi, errr, poop on the grass." She was off and running on... and on, caught up in a prolix rant of all the invidious laws that were implemented by the intransigent government and law makers of her time. Sitting quietly upon his horse, listening to her rant, the paladin had not answered her questions. He'd had no opportunity to do so as she hadn't shut up long enough for him to get a word in edgewise.

Sir Gibbs had been riding along, minding his own business when he discovered the road had been washed out by a flood, so he took a detour which led him down a trail he'd never ridden before. As he'd ridden between some tall rocks there had been a strange, blue flash of light and suddenly things seemed different. Now for 3 days he had been in this strange land. It seemed in many ways to be the land where he'd lived all his life, and yet there were so many things that were different. Even this maiden was odd. The unchaste clothing she wore that not even lowly peasant would wear seemed to be the normal dress here, and the more than odd way she spoke, somewhat offensive to the ears. There were also those ugly, noisy machines they rode around in, with no horses to pull them. In fact, he'd not seen one horse since that strange flash of blue light. He had this peculiar feeling that he was no longer in his own time.

And still she babbled on....

>>> I Am Grateful <<<

Hi All. I've been so tired and so busy that I haven't had a chance to blog for several days, so I have lots of catching up to do. I've missed hearing from all of you.

Saturday I was so tired that I had a ringing/buzzing in my head most of the day and just could not stand the light of the computer monitor or think straight enough to blog. I spent part of the day sleeping and don't really remember just now what else I did.

Sunday I went to the Service at the Centre for Spiritual Living, as always. Right after that, we had our monthly Board Meeting and man was that long. It was about 3 1/2 hours long, in fact. We accomplished a lot in that time, and I was still very happy to see it come to an end. By that time I had a headache. I had left Reba home, knowing it would be a long day for her to be in the truck, so I couldn't take her for a walk. Instead, I met friend Wendy for tea and a nice visit, then came home. By this time I could hardly keep my eyes open, though it was only around 5:30 or 6pm. I wouldn't let my self go to bed at that hour or I'd be up in a couple hours and for all night. I don't know how, I somehow managed to stay up way too late again.... I installed MahJongg (bought it a month or two ago and still hadn't used it) on my new laptop, and got into playing it, so went to bed around 2 or 3am, and had to get up early. Oh ya, got a call from one neighbor about my rooster. They are not happy about him waking them at 5am each day. For several years I had chickens and always had a rooster and never did that bother any of my neighbors, including this one, yet for some reason they are hearing this one every morning, 'as if he's right in our bedroom'. I've been keeping them in a chicken tractor (portable house/run) so guess he comes out each morning a crows his head off, and there's nothing to stop the noise. The old ones were in a shed with another shed between them & the neighbor's house. Now I have to take them out at night, once they're asleep, (they being the 1 rooster & 1 hen) and move them into the shed, in an old rabbit cage, then out again in the morning. This will work until I get something else set up. I hope that helps with the neighbors sleep.

Up at 7am Monday morning to get ready to go out (I have never been a morning person). I had another appointment at the Diabetic Clinic that took all morning, then I sat in my truck awhile, resting. I was too tired to do anything else just then, not sure if I slept, though think I did nod off for a wee bit. Next I went to London Drugs to take care of some business there. I had planned to walk Reba before going to the pool, though ran out of time for that. I grabbed a much needed sandwich as my blood sugar dropped too low, then went to the pool and took my first Aqua Therapy class, 45 minutes doing exercises in the water. It was wonderful, then I went and soaked awhile in the hot tub, visiting an old friend that happened to be there too. I would have taken Reba for her walk then except it was raining, not heavy though heavy enough I didn't want to go walking in it. I went and picked up a couple groceries I needed and headed home. Played more MahJongg and watched TV.

Today I had planned to go to Aqua Therapy again... and didn't get there. The fellow who traded me 2 lovebirds for some old rabbit & chinchilla cages I had came back today with 2 more lovebirds and took away more cages. I still have a few left, though not many now. The cage I have the first 2 lovebirds in is a budgie cage and I don't feel it is large enough to house 4 birds in it (lovebirds are just a little larger than budgies), and I didn't have any more bird cages, so I brought in one of the chinchilla cages I had saved. I'd figured I would need it for just this purpose, so didn't let him take every last one. I had to do some 'reno' work on the cage, putting wire over a hole cut in the cage for a food dispenser that is not used for birds. I also had to put purches in, and dig out feed/water cups to use for them. Once the cage was ready I put them in. Then is when all 'heaven' broke loose. The two pairs of lovebirds started 'talking' at top volume, and Paco the Ringneck Parrot chimed in, attempting to drown the others out. It got incredibly LOUD in here, to where I couldn't stand it. Finally I covered the cage with the new loves in it and things quieted down considerably. Then I laid down awhile to let the new headache go away, and read about setting the time on my new blood glucose tester (now have 2, 1 for at home, 1 for in my purse). Then I cleaned 2 of the chinchilla cages and got ready to leave. This evening was spent at Toastmasters. I did the 'mini ed', supplied the snack, evaluated a speech, and gave the closing thought. A great meeting. Then I had a bit of a visit with friend Pat before coming home to write to all of you.

The speech I evaluated was fabulous. It was based on a book by Lynn Grabhorn, "Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting: the astonishing power of feelings. Basically about the Law Of Attraction, something I've been studying for some time now, it was a great speech and sounds like a wonderful book. Paul loaned it to me, so I am soon headed to bed to read. I have a few other books stacked up waiting for me to read them, and they will have to wait as I own them and don't own this one.

~ I am grateful I am feeling much more rested now.
~ I am grateful for all I learned from putting on Pasta Productions again, and for going over it in the board meeting. There were only a few small suggestions for improvements, and none of the big critisisms that there were last time.
~ I am grateful for things I have learned in the Diabetic Clinic classes.
~ I am grateful I am healthy.
~ I am grateful for the Aqua Therapy classes I am blessed to go to for free.
~ I am grateful that I am being more physically active these days, and feeling good because of it.
~ I am grateful Smudge (chinchilla) is still in his cage even though I accidentally left the cage door open when I cleaned the cage earlier.
~ I am grateful I got 2 chin cages cleaned today. If you count the 'new bird cage' that makes 3 clean cages... and 7 cages to go. (I must be insane!)
~ I am grateful for the pellets I still am burning each night to warm the house.
~ I am grateful I already have people wanting to do things for the next Pasta Productions, and coming up with great ideas for future ones.
~ I am grateful for my rooster & hen, as well as the eggs I get (unless they beat me to it and eat it themselves as I discovered they've been doing some days).
~ I am grateful for hydro. Without hydro I don't know how we'd live now that we are so dependant on it. The TV, pellet stove/furnace, lights, computer, fridge, freezer, stove, water heater, clock, radio, phones, kettle, water dispenser... on and on and on.
~ I am grateful I had some extra bird dishes.
~ I am grateful I kept a few cages and can use them for birds.
~ I am grateful I used to raise and show rabbits. It was a great experience.
~ I am grateful for my new laptop, and that it is smaller, lighter, easier to carry along.

Quote of the Day

"There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still."

Franklin D. Roosevelt

*** I Am Grateful ***

Wow, what a day.

I had been up until 3am, so slept late this morning, not good as I had things to do in town before going to the Centre. I forget just now what I had to do on the computer at home, though guess I did it, lol. I phoned around to find some tickets for the 50/50 draw and did some other stuff. By the time I showered and got out of here it was 2pm or a bit after... probably an hour after what I should have left.

I went to Superstore and rushed around. Got bagged salad (iceburg lettuce, carrot, red cabbage) and some celery, red peppers, green onions as well as salad dressings for Pasta Productions, and a couple bottles of Club Soda for me. Next, the water store for a bag of ice cubes. Then a discount store for 50/50 tickets and tea light candles. I got the the Centre about 3pm, half an hour late.

Took everything in and found there was only one of my volunteers there. Another one came not long afterwards, one was a no-show, so it was a good thing I had some spares lined up. One other I had found out a couple days ago would not be showing up as promised. Lots of 'stress' giving them instructions and getting them going. Kitchen stuff is not my strong point. One of my volunteers, thankfully, is very good in the kitchen. I'd forgotten to get garlic bread, so was going to get it and he had me get 2 tomatoes and a long english cucumber too for the salad.

Around 5:30 I finally had the chance to slip away and get changed, after posting two volunteers as greeters at the entry, to welcome guests and take their tickets. While I was getting ready, my Mom & sister Marcy arrived, as well as others. Dinner was supposed to be at 6pm, and didn't get served until around 6:20pm. Because there was less vegetarian lasagna than meat, I had the vegetarians go first to get their meals, then the rest of us went by table. I had one person from each table pick a playing card and then went by the highest card to the lowest. (I took an old deck that was missing some cards along for this purpose. Hey, I've never been accused of playing with a full deck, so why start now, lol) There was 6 lasagnas, and I figured there's be loads of it left over to freeze for Pot Luck on the first Sunday of May. There were 28 people (a lot less than I'd wanted, only 14 paid, 5 brought lasagna, the rest were voluteers or musicians, juggler, me). I was totally shocked at the end of the evening when I found that there was only 2 pieces of vegetarian lasagna left, and not much of the huge salad. Apparently we had some pigs that went back for 2 and 3 helpings. Most of the garlic toast was also gone. I ended up bringing the last of the lasagna and garlic toast home with me as there was just not enough to put away, and someone else would just eat it anyway. It was not supposed to be an "all you can eat" smorge, so I wasn't really impressed. I will do that differently next time. The volunteers were supposed to dish out the food, then put it away and eat theirs. They sat down to eat theirs before everyone was even dished up, having let someone else take over their job. Those two will have to pay next time if they want to come as I won't have them as volunteers on my next Production. I learned a lot, and there are changes I will make.

The concert portion was awesome. It went very well. Fabulous music, incredible juggling act, and my poetry was the entertainment of the evening, and it all went very well. I was the MC. The only thing I was unhappy about with the concert portion is that it somewhat got changed into a talent show. Hannah had Bev do a duet with her, then do a solo on the piano. Bev is a piano student of Hannahs. I wasn't happy. One act was to be Linda & Jim, and she had a friend of hers come and do 5 songs with her rather than just do the duet with Jim. Little things, I'm sure, though not keeping with what I (the Productions Manager, or as Don nicknamed me, Pasta Masta) had planned for the evening.

Little irritations and minor problems aside, it was an awesome evening and it all went very well when you look at the whole picture!!

- I am grateful for the volunteers that helped with this evening. I could not put on such an evening without them. I am especially grateful for the two that worked hard, and I am even grateful for the two that hardly worked.
- I am grateful for the quality of talent I had backing me up, preforming to entertain our guests this evening.
- I am grateful for all the people that showed up tonight.
- I am grateful that so many seemed to really liked my poetry that I read
- I am grateful for all the compliments on how good I looked tonight. I wore a really nice black dress and I wore make-up, something I rarely wear.
- I am grateful Mom & Marcy came. It is rare the family supports what I do and when they do it means a lot to me. I think they enjoyed it.
- I am grateful to everyone who brought lasagna tonight
- I am grateful Pasta Productions #2 went so much better than #1 did.
- I am grateful for all the things I learn each time I put on something like this, so each one can be better than those that went before.
- I am grateful these give me the opportunity to 'preform'. I love being the MC, and reading my poetry to people.
- I am grateful everyone seemed to have a great time.
- I am grateful it's over for another time and that I don't have to think about #3 for a day or two.
- I am grateful my Saturday this week will be all about me. No Toastmasters speech to prepare, no Pasta Productions to work on... just me and my critters.
- I am grateful for the bed that awaits me now. Nite nite!!

Quote of the Day

You are the masterpiece of your own life; you are the Michelangelo of your experience. The David that you are sculpting is you. And you do it with your thoughts.

— Dr Joe Vitale

*** I Am Grateful ***

Today I did some work on choosing poems for tomorrow evening's performance, though I didn't finish the job. I got distracted with other things and just didn't get it done. I talked to a fellow who called in answer to my ad for volunteers, and to a woman who called about that too. Both sound very interested in working with us, especially the gal. Great stuff.

I wrote my Three Word Thursday post, and helped Reba with hers. I got around and read everyone else's posts and Reba did some though she still needs to go comment on 4 of them.

As some of you may remember, I've been having some problems with this laptop for awhile now. Could be lots worse, though any problems aren't good ones. The other day, I saw in the WalMart flyer an Acer laptop with 3GB RAM, 160GB hard drive. I had Dan (friend) go with me this evening as he knows WAY more about computers than I do. Turns out the WalMart in our city doesn't carry that kind. Great! And it was only $449. So, I had them call the store to the south of us about 45 minute drive, and yes, they had them in stock, so I talked Dan into going there, haha. So, $502.88 after taxes and I got myself a new laptop. Of course, not top of the line for that price, yet looks like it will be a good one for anything I need it to do. Before I can use it, though, I have to get Dan to put programs on it, like anti-virus protection, Firefox, Office, Photoshop... to name a few.

For the last few days I've had a runny nose, no sneezing or coughing or stuffiness... just runny nose. I woke up in the night with the feeling of water running from my nose and it's been running ever since. This evening I've been sneezing a wee bit and have had a little bit of stuffy feeling. All this seems very odd. I remember back in the day when I last had a cold (it literally has been many years since I had one), and this just doesn't seem like the way they start, so I don't know what's going on. I've never had alergy problems, except to smoke and this is not at all like that. When around smoke, especially cigarette smoke, my nose/sinuses swells shut and I have problems breathing as I am totally a nose breather. I am wondering if this could be such a thing as an alergy happening. Whatever it is, I look forward to it being history. I have no time for being sick, thank you very much.

This evening, even though Reba was sleeping close to my chair, Mewsic flew across the room and up onto my chair, then cuddled down beside me/half on me, and went to sleep. She's still here. I love it when she snuggles up with me and I can touch her all I want.

- I am grateful for the volunteers that are showing interest in working at the Centre.
- I am grateful I got my Three Word Thursday post written and up.
- I am grateful I helped Reba get her 3 Woof Thursday post done... her big paws just don't work well on the laptop keyboard.
- I am grateful to all who come and read 3WT, and my other posts too.
- I am grateful for all feedback on my writing, and I apologize for writing such bad Quival... lol.
- I am grateful Dan went with me to look at the laptop and give me his oppinion on it.
- I am grateful Dan drove me all the way to the second WalMart (saved me coming home for my truck and driving myself as well as got his oppinion)
- I am grateful for my new laptop.
- I am grateful for this older laptop.
- I am grateful this one is still working.
- I am grateful Mewsic is here with me.
- I am grateful my body fights off colds and flus so I never have to have them.
- I am grateful I am healthy.
- I am grateful for cloth hankies.
- I am grateful good humor and laughter.
- I am grateful for the sound of a cats purrrrrr.
- I am grateful for the cute little faces that keep peeking out at me from the chinchilla cages as they wait for me to visit them and feed them their snacks.
- I am grateful to look up and see all my birds settled in for the night.
- I am grateful for 'good tired', which I am tonight... and soon I can be grateful for my bed, pillows, blankets.

*** Three Word Thursday ***

Each week, Quilly gives us three words to write into a story. Oh, they're not just any words, not words you'd hear/see ever day. Nope, these are obscure words, endangered words. Before we can write to these words, we have to find them on the internet so as to find out their meaning so they can be used properly. This week's words are:

antediluvian: [an-tee-di-loo-vee-uhn]
–adjective
1. of or belonging to the period before the Flood. Gen. 7, 8.
2. very old, old-fashioned, or out of date; antiquated; primitive: antediluvian ideas.
–noun
3. a person who lived before the Flood.
4. a very old or old-fashioned person or thing.

prolix: [proh-liks, proh-liks]
–adjective
1. extended to great, unnecessary, or tedious length; long and wordy.
2. (of a person) given to speaking or writing at great or tedious length.

ineluctable:[in-i-luhk-tuh-buhl]
–adjective
incapable of being evaded; inescapable: an ineluctable destiny.

"What? You were kissing him? No wonder you can't keep a man. You rush into these things far too fast!!" scolded the mother of the 48 year old woman, stuck in her antediluvian thoughts, or suffering from some kind of old age related dementia, the daughter didn't know which, she only knew that in this day and age, kissing a man she'd dated several times was not a big deal... it's not as if she was sleeping with him on the first date, as it seemed her mother was accusing her of. She knew it was pointless to get into a prolix remonstration that she would not win. After all, it's not like it was an ineluctable topic. She wondered if she was listening to strains of her grandmother, coming through her mother. She decided to just let it go and in fact, after a moment of silence changed the subject.

"So where did you want to go for lunch, Mom? Or do you want to go shopping first?" she asked, though she already knew at that time of day her mother would want to eat.

"Let's go for lunch first," said the elderly lady. "Then I want to go shop for some clothes."

"What do you want to eat? Do you know which restaurant you want to go to?"

On the conversation went as the light turned green again and the younger woman accelerated the car, turning left through the intersection and continuing down the street.

Quivel

Dr. John came up with the idea (Quilly + drivel), and he says: Remember to write quivel you must write something that looks like a poem, any style , but is so bad that if it was printed in a book of poetry a true poetic zoilist would tear it out and burn it. What looks like bad haiku is really qiku where the middle line must always contain a Quilly word.

Paladins of Charlemagne
Antediluvian are we
Waste not our time
With words of prolix plea
For totally ineluctable
Are my mates & me.

Not
Antediluvian
I

Tendency to
prolix
I confess

Of life
ineluctable
old age or death

The Week Twelve words will be: paladin, intransigent, & invidious

When I went to Quilly's to get these words, I had to chuckle. I already used one of them in this week's post.

*** I Am Grateful ***

Today was a good day, as always.

I did:
- some of my Passion Test homework, though didn't get it finished.
- took all seed, veggie, water dishes from the 5 bird cages, soaked them in bleach water then scrubbed them with a brush & rinsed. Then filled them all and gave them back.
- Tried to visit Thom's blog and couldn't get there... it wouldn't come up. Tried again tonight and got on.
- went to the Centre and did my volunteer work... finished & printed out the Sunday programs so Lorraine could put them together. Printed out the Volunteer Information Forms I created yesterday. Printed sheets of labels to put onto the donation envelopes, then put many of them onto the envelopes. Talked to Rev. Sheila about being a volunteer coordinator, she used to be one, things like expectations and such. I really hadn't planned on becoming a volunteer coordinator, I have more than enough to do already. I just was getting volunteers for Pasta Productions this Friday and it somehow has ballooned on me. Oh well, if it helps the Centre to grow and prosper then it's worth it. I am also looking for volunteers to take over some of my work there, so it could still be a benefit to me.
- A Course In Miracles study group 5-6:30pm
- went to get a piece of chicken & a green salad from A&W, also drove across town to the Dollarama (closer stores were already closed) and got a couple sheets of bristle board for this evenings class
- back to the Centre for the Passion Test class. Part of what we did this eve was make Vision Boards, cut pictures and words from magazines to paste on our bristle board sheets. We each were to do this based on what our passions are, though I didn't find much to support my passions, so did mine on other things I'd like to create in my life... like an organized home, and a few other things. It did partially support my passions, just not to the extent I'd have liked. I can still do more at home if I want to take some time for fun, creative work... I have lots of magazines I could go through.
- forgot my stainless steel water canteen at the Centre
- received an award.... TWICE. Two different people gave me the same one. Tomorrow I will think about that.

I've not been using the heat in my home lately which has been very nice. Tonight it's feeling really quite cold in here so I think the stove could use with being lit. Problem being that I don't have pellets in the house and there's a bunch of 'crap' in front of the pellet pallet out in the carport. Guess I'll just let the furnace kick in when it gets to that, and I will be warm in my bed soon anyway.

I want to write my Three Word Thursday... and I'm just too tired tonight. Soooo, I will get to that in the morning. I usually go to TOPS on Thursday mornings, and I think I will just skip it this week. I still have to choose which poems I've written that I want to share on Friday night as part of the concert. Cutting it a bit close, and that's my life lately. I wonder sometimes if I was to cut back on things so I had more time if I would get things done, or just sit here and watch TV or play MahJong on the computer, and still do things last minute.

- I am grateful for everything I did today
- I am grateful that some nights I can just think about being grateful and don't have to write them all out when I really need to go feed critters and go to bed before I fall asleep with my noze in the keyboard.
- I am grateful .... pure and simple!!
.

My Speech for Toastmasters

In response to Quilly's request... I am sharing with you the speech I gave at Toastmasters this evening. Thanks for the interest, Quilly.

I would like to point out that the names have largely been changed here... after all, this is the internet and one has to consider the whole identity theft problem... something I want nothing to do with. The bold, underlined words are to catch my eye if/when I need to glance at my notes... makes for good use of notes without being obvious... just glance over and see key words that stick out and remind me what I want to say.

A speech for Toastmasters April 21, 2009

The Story of Jesse John Peel

Born in a sod hut

On the prairie flat,

Part of his parents’ new life,

Was a young fellow

Named Jesse John,

Never gave his Mama no strife.

.

One of his jobs

As a young boy

Was to make pesky gophers dead,

So he fashioned a scoop

With it’s handle long,

And poison from horseback he fed.

.

He lived through winter

Storms so bad

You would’ve lost your way,

If not for a rope,

From barn to house,

Strung on a better day.

.

Kids held on tight

To a lariat rope

Behind Jesse’s horse at a run.

“Flat land skiing”

On a winter’s day

Was the ultimate way to have fun.

.

As luck would have it,

The day did come…

Jesse turned a little too short.

A big gate post

And a girl’s broken arm

Put an end to this “Olympic Sport”.

.

As a young man

In “depression” times,

Jesse found a way to live.

To full grown horses

Who’d never seen man,

“Riding lessons” Jesse did give.

.

They’d rope ‘em

And hog tie ‘em

Strap on the appropriate saddle.

Rip off the ropes…

The horse was up,

With Jesse already astraddle.

.

As years went by

Jesse headed west,

Left the “bald-headed prairie” behind.

He crossed over mountains,

Then headed north,

His future adventures to find.

.

In a small café,

In a northern town,

Jesse found his future wife.

She was his waitress,

Who became his friend,

Then Sally became Jesse’s life.

.

In later years

A girl of eight

Saw Jesse ride a rearing horse.

From that moment on

He was her hero.

She knew not of his past, of course.

.

He told her stories

About teams of horses,

Matched in looks, size and strength,

Of harnesses fancy

Decorated with red tufts,

He entertained her at great length.

.

In his elder years,

Jesse was heard to joke,

That the best job he and Annie had done

Was, as expert gardeners,

They’d raised five Blooming Idiots,

And he was proud of every last one!

Madame Toastmaster, Fellow Toastmasters, Welcome Guests

Abigail Ann Olive Bird cooked for the Royal Family during Queen Victoria’s rein.

Joshua James Peel was a sailor in the Queen’s Royal Navy.

In 1906 Josh & Abigail became husband and wife. In 1910, along with one year old Iris, they joined Abigail’s father and some of her siblings, immigrating to Canada where they took up farming, and took up residence in a sod hut on the bald headed prairie of Saskatchewan. Can you imagine coming from the life they must have had in England to live in a Soddy…and miles from the nearest town??

Abigail gave birth to 5 more children, all right there in that Soddy. On August 16th, 1915, she gave birth to her fourth child, a son who they named after Josh’s 2 brothers… Jesse & John. In the early days, he went by Jess, later by Jon. I knew him simply as Dad.

Dad only completed Grade 4, largely due to his poor eyesight and the family not having the money to buy him glasses. He took on many odd jobs, including the killing of gofers for farmers in the area. Anything to help put food on the table.

In 1930 he decided he could no longer eat the food his siblings needed, so he left home. He went to live with Herb & Hat Johnstone where the 14 year old boy took on the work of a man on their 320 acres. Herb & Hat were very good to Jess, and they treated him like a son.

One of the jobs he did while there was breaking horses. They brought in horses that were as much as 5 or 6 years old and had never seen man. The horses would be roped and hog tied, the saddle & halter put on, then the ropes would be removed from the legs. By the time the horse was up on its feet, the cowboy, in this case Dad, would already be in the saddle. That’s the way it was done in those days. From what Dad told Mom, there were many days he’d be bleeding from both ends from the hard pounding of riding the bucking horses. It was a hard way to make a living… and it was the ‘Dirty 30s’.

Around the end of the ‘Great Depression’ often called the “Dirty 30s”, Jess left the prairies and headed west to BC where he lived around the Pritchard/ Kamloops area for a time, working on the Trans Canada Highway hauling gravel. From there he moved to Vanderhoof where his older brother Al was living. They both worked in the Powerhouse!

In 1947, Jesse John Peel went to Smitherton to work in the Powerhouse there. He met Sally Lapus in a café where she was working as a waitress. Jon & Sally were married July 13, 1948 with her brother Jack & her dear friend Marcy standing up with them.

In ’52, they moved onto a 97 acre farm 1½ miles west of town, which they had purchased for $4,000! That same year, Dad went to work for the CN Railroad, & in September, Marcy Bonita was born. By this time they had buried their son, Gerald William, who had only lived 1½ years. 195_ saw the birth of Terry Joshua, I was born in ’5_, and Bernie Roger in ’5_.

To this day, I think they made a big mistake in 1967, though that is just my opinion and maybe they did do the right thing. They sold the farm!! That fall, riding horses and herding cattle, we moved to a rented farm on the other side of Smithers.

Spring 1968 they bought the Marra Coffee Shop (with gas pumps and a small store) and we moved to Marra to run it. A living could not be made there, so Dad had to go work on the railroad in Lillooet during the summers, relieving men on vacation. We were only there for 2 years, then rented in Grinrod for the summer until the purchase of a home in Cashton Creek.

We had brought Bernie’s horse down from Smitherton with us so had him as well as one I’d gotten while in Marra. When my parents sold the Cashton Creek home, those last 2 horses were sold as well and we moved again.

We rented at Springs Bent, just out of Hooterville, for a few months then moved into our new home in town. I was married, divorced, and living in Vermont before they sold that one.

A few more homes and moves took Mom & Dad to a condo in Hooterville. They were there when I taught Dad to sign “I Love You” which turned out to be a wonderful idea. He was often able to tell me with sign language what he had found so difficult to put into words.

At 85 years of age, Mom still lives in that condo, though Dad passed away January 18, 1999.

In a very small nut shell, that is the Story of Jesse John…. Peel.

*** I Am Grateful ***

Ahhhh, here I sit in the comfort of my recliner chair and it feels good.

I didn't make it to town today to do my Water Walking, or the Aqua Therapy I want to get started in. Instead, I stayed home to practice my speech and while I did do some of that, I also did a bunch of stuff for the Centre. I phoned some of the volunteers for Friday, one is not going to be there after all, one still is, one I left a message for and he hasn't called back, and one I can't find his number to call and confirm, so hope he still shows up at 3pm Friday as agreed. I also made up a Volunteer Information Form so I can start to keep prospective volunteers on file, and contacted Rev. Dale for a list of jobs he wants volunteers for, also emailed all other Board Members to ask if they had ideas of other jobs we need/want volunteers for. I have a list of people from the Volunteer Bureau as well as I did get 2 replies to my 'volunteers wanted' ad I put into the paper.

This evening I went to Toastmasters. I had a terrible time finding the manual I needed to have to get the evaluation in, then finally just as I was leaving without it, I thought of one last place to look, and found it. For my 8 - 10 minute speech, I chose to talk about my fathers life. I started by reciting a poem (12 verses, 6 lines per verse) that I wrote for my Dad in 1997. Then I spoke of how his mother had cooked for the Royal Family during Queen Victoria's rein, his father had been a sailor in the Queen's Royal Navy, the year they were married and when they immigrated to Canada (handed out photos to pass around)... how Dad was the 4th of 6 children, got a grade 4 education then left home to go to work at age 14. How he moved from Saskatchewan to BC, where he worked, how he met Mom, the kids they had... all that kind of stuff, just touching on things right up to his passing away in '99. It turned out rather well and I was happy to get a very good evaluation.

Pat invited me to go for tea afterward, like we usually do. I said no as I just have too busy a week this week. That is the truth, though I will admit to you that I'm not really in a rush to be too friendly with her anymore. I like her a lot, though she complained to Sheila about me behind my back and I'm not happy about that. I know we all do that to a point and I can't say I never have... however, she made Sheila think she did all the work of preparing the Speech Contest and the truth is that she did help me a lot, and she didn't do it all. I did do a lot of it too. I do forgive her, I don't want to hang onto the emotions of it so I let them go with joy... and I am just not sure I want to be really friendly any more. We'll see in time.

So, now I am blogging when I need to work on the homework for tomorrow evenings class. I have a pile of work to do on that yet and have just not had the time to get it done yet. Hey, I just got my speech written yesterday to present tonight, that's how behind I am with many things just now (working on too many things at once I think).

- I am grateful for the wonderful content feeling I have just now
- I am grateful for the comfort of my chair
- I am grateful to have successfully presented another speech
- I am grateful for the very good evaluation I got for my speech
- I am grateful for people willing to give of their time at the Centre
- I am grateful that I may be able to give up one or two of my volunteer jobs
- I am grateful for my laptop computer
- I am grateful my birds are all quiet, most of them sleeping (some were very noisy today)
- I am grateful to be inside as it's very windy outside just now

*** I Am Grateful ***

Today, Monday, I wanted to go to the pool for Aqua Therapy, or even Water Walking, and had to skip it as I was too busy. I was writing a speech to present at Toastmasters tomorrow evening... cutting it way too close as it is, so had to get it done. I still need to practice it as I only got it practiced once today. After I finished writing the speech and reading it to myself a couple times, I was off to Hannah's to rehearse the song we will do together at Pasta Productions on Friday. We had a really fun time, it's been great doing this rehearsing together again, though it's just for this one song, not an ongoing thing.

From there, I checked out some bathing suits and didn't care for any of them. While doing this, I was texting Wendy. She met Reba & I at the dog park, bringing her dog Steel along. We had a really nice walk, Carol C. and her dog Eddy joined us about half way through. Wendy & Carol went for coffee after, and I had to skip as Dan was coming over to return my wheelbarrow. On the way home I stopped at the store across the lake from my place and got some veggies and apples.

Dan didn't stay long, though while he was here, my friend Len came by. Len had told me he could get a bunch of baseboard from where he's working (construction) so he brought me samples today so I could pick which one I want. He'll bring me enough to do my entire home, and even up at the ceiling in part of it. This will save me hundreds of dollars while putting a really nice finish to the flooring job.

Since Dan left, I have been enjoying watching TV as well as blogging. I really should be practicing/rehearsing my speech for tomorrow night, and in fact will go do that very soon... and get a piece of Cinnamon Raising toast... mmm. A rare treat.

- I am grateful I have my speech written.
- I am grateful for the time spent with Hannah, and for the fun we had together.
- I am grateful to have gone for a nice walk with Reba & friends today.
- I am grateful for the nice weather we had for our walk.
- I am grateful for time with friends.
- I am grateful I got some reading done for The Passion Test class.
- I am grateful to have seen a beautiful tree in bloom today.
- I am grateful to have my wheelbarrow back again.
- I am grateful I met my newest neighbor last night (forgot to mention that).
- I am grateful for Len living in his travel trailer in my yard.
- I am grateful for all the baseboard Len is bringing to me for my home.
- I am grateful to Dan for the work he's promised to do putting the baseboard on.
- I am grateful to be fixing my home up, bit by bit.
- I am grateful to have all my animals around me.
- I am grateful for my TV.
- I am grateful for Satellite and Cable bringing me a good choice of programs to enjoy.

*** I Am Grateful ***

I'll bet some of you have wondered, "Where is she? Has she died?" Or maybe no one even noticed I haven't posted for a couple days. Well, read on and I'll tell you about it.

I just looked back and see the last Gratitude List I wrote was on Friday. Well, I know on Saturday I wrote the Wordzlle Challenge and I seem to remember visiting some of the other blogs to read their Wordzlles. Beyond that I'm afraid I don't really remember just now exactly what I did that day, though it seems I was busy doing something. Oh... one thing, a man showed up here asking if I'd like to sell some of my rabbit cages that I've had stacked up in my front yard for some time now. I said "sure". He raises several species of birds, and it ended up with him taking about a half dozen cages in exchange for a pair of young, about 6 months old, Peach Face Lovebirds. He wanted the cages for his granddaughter who raises fancy pigeons and needs cages for some of them. He had to talk to her before he actually made the deal, so took my phone number and called that night while I was out (and now I remember what I did). He actually came for the cages and brought the birds to me on Sunday morning.

Saturday my friend PatZ picked me up and we drove to the town where my Mom lives as our friend Carole also lives there. Carole was putting on an EFT demo which I really wanted to see as I've heard/read about EFT and wanted to know more. PatZ already does some of it herself. It was a fabulous demo. I got up as a volunteer to have something done and chose to use wanting to loose weight. Carole did it in such a way as to lessen my cravings for sweets, then to rid my cravings for Coke. Someone got a nice, ice cold can of Coke from the fridge and put it into my hands. Carole asked me to rate my desire on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being want it most. I said about 5. We did some more EFT work and I actually was honestly able to say "I don't even want it" and set the can down. There are people that knew me who would likely not believe what I just told you... at one time I drank 6 litres or more of Coke every day!!! I had cut it down to at most 2 litres a week and likely less, then since late January, I've not drank any, though continued to still think I wanted it. I wish I'd done this EFT work sooner. Also, someone put a chocolate bar in my hand, and I really didn't even have a desire for it.

After the demo, we went to Mom's for tea. My brother Bernie was down from northern Alberta and though usually out with friends, he was at Mom's when we were there. Mom, Bernie, sister Marcy her husband Randy, their daughter Shannon, husband Brad, kids Carter & Kennedy were all going out for Chinese, so Bernie suggested I stay and go out with them. I pointed out I didn't have my truck, and he said he'd drive me home later, so I stayed. After dinner we all went to M&R's place for the evening, then B & Mom drove me home around 10pm. He had to ask where I live and how to get here.... I've only lived here in this house for 18 1/2 years. He was, years ago, in my driveway when he drove Dad here to pick me up one time. Dad's been gone 10 years now, and it was quite some time before that when this happened. That's the only time B has been here. Sister Anne has also been in the driveway many years ago, likely around that same time as I only was without a vehicle on the road for a short time one year. Marcy has been inside the house, though not since shortly after I moved in, and she's picked me up here a few times when she & Mom came to town, or the time we all went to the Coast and on an Alaska cruise. Terry has been here, back in '97 when I hired his company to do renos on my home, and build an addition. Don't remember if he's even been here other than that and one time dropping off a deepfreeze for me that turned out not to work. That's how 'close' we are... though they all visit each other. It used to bother me, and doesn't any more. Anyway... by the time I got home and fed the animals I was too tired to blog.

Sunday I was up early to go to the Centre for Spiritual Living, after Al came for the cages and dropped of the Lovebirds. I was presiding over the service, something I always love doing. After that, I went to the Dog Park to walk Reba, then back down town to Phyllis's home for dinner with her, Jan & PatZ. While there, Carol G called and said she was at my place. Her & her daughter went to do other things while I finished my dinner & visit, then when I came home Carol came back and we had a really nice visit. By the time she left I was almost falling asleep, and it was only around 11pm. The last while I've actually been tired at around that time, which is most unusual for me, though likely a good thing.

- I am grateful I am awake enough tonight to blog, and home early enough to do so.
- I am grateful for all the nice comments left about my Wordzzle stories.
- I am grateful to have gotten rid of some of those old rabbit cages before they get too rusty to be any good.
- I am grateful for the beauty of my new Peachfaced Lovebirds
- I am grateful for the EFT demo
- I am grateful to be letting go of my cravings/desires for sweets.
- I am grateful for dinner with the family.
- I am grateful every opportunity I get to speak in public.
- I am grateful for walks with Reba.
- I am grateful for time spent with friends.
- I am grateful for good nights sleeps.
- I am grateful to be going to bed earlier and getting up earlier.
- I am grateful for all growth, spiritual and personal.
- I am grateful for the food I eat
- I am grateful for the money I have to spend
- I am grateful Mewsic is cuddled up with me as I type this.

*** Wordzzle Challenge ***

Raven, at Views From Raven's Nest, has created this word puzzle, Wordzzle, for us to have a challenge and write to. The words/phrases to work with this week are:

Main Challenge (10):
prefix, art festival, income tax, chicken noodle soup, jump rope, Dutch Treat, flowering plum tree, bats in the belfry, diamond earrings, tigers

Mini Challenge (5):
book club, organic tea, the cow jumped over the moon, paragon of virtue, wench

My Mini Challenge (5):

The weekly book club meeting was held at the Organic Tea Room, a small shop run by a woman who grew her own herbs and such, using them to make every tea she sold, by the cup or in packets to take home with you. The book of the month was titled The Cow Jumped Over The Moon, though it was not about bovines. Instead, it was about a young serving girl, who was a paragon of virtue. "Lord and lady, groom and wench" -- the quote by Chaucer started the first chapter.

My Main Wordzzle Challenge (10):

"Lets go for lunch," said one of the Overbeak brothers.
"It's Dutch Treat," chimed in the other brother, and she knew they meant they were paying. They were Dutch, and it was their treat. Sunday afternoon lunch with the brothers always proved to be of the highest enjoyment for her, a prefix to a day filled with laughter and with deep spiritual discussions where it was always safe to disagree, knowing there would be no put downs or reprisals, only learning and growing. The brothers were from a large family that had been raised with strict religion, she was from a medium sized family that had never gone to church, and yet they were all attending the same Spiritual Centre now.

One Sunday in particular, they had gone to a small cafe called the Flowering Plum Tree, where she had ordered chicken noodle soup with an egg salad sandwich, and upon the urging of the brothers added strawberry pie for desert... she was going to have to jump rope a lot this week to wear that lunch off.

Afterward, the three friends went to an art festival that was on that weekend at the Area. Gayle had sent several of her creations to the festival with a friend who had a booth there, so wanted to see how things were going as well as investigate all other booths and items for sale and display. She owed money on her income tax, so knew she must have bats in the belfry when she decided to buy a pair of diamond earrings in the shape of tigers. They were just so beautiful, one of a kind, and were surprisingly low priced for the quality she was getting. Each of the brothers offered to pay part of it, though she thanked them kindly and assured them she could manage it herself.

My Mega Challenge (15)

"It breaks my heart to not be able to deliver you the juicy stories from behind the bar that have kept tavern wench going this long," said the bar tender, "howsoever, I have had the Mrs. down my throat about sharing such stories." Thus went the beginning of Chapter 3 in "The Cow Jumped Over The Moon."

"Yer Mrs. can be a bit of a cow that way," added one of the fellows standing at the bar, drinking a tall glass of ale.

"Aye, she can at that! A real Dutch Treat!" threw in another customer. "Another ale, Henry." he ordered as all the men laughed at his statement.

"Me wife is a good mother an all. Aye, she's a right paragon of virtue," the bartender, Henry, prefixed before going on to complain some more about the woman he was married to.

After several minutes of drinking ale and discussing the less than fine points of the woman, the conversation died down, all men standing around drinking their ale. "She does make a right fine chicken noodle soup! And biscuits too," said one of the men. "You'd have bats in the belfry to not admit that." and the conversation went on about the woman's culinary skills, and what a fine wife she was.

Gayle sipped her organic tea as she continued reading the book of the month for her book club. Having sold several things at the art festival, she had paid off her income tax and her credit card, so now she could fully enjoy the sparkling diamond earrings in the shape of tigers that now danced below her shapely ears. She set her book aside as she sat beneath the flowering plum tree, and thought about how she had really blown things. She wondered whatever had possessed her to sleep with one of the Overbeak brothers, and if she was going to do such a thing, why had it been Hans when it should have been Burt. Burt was the one she was closest to, after all, and he loved her. She knew she had fallen into a self destruct mode... again. She had hurt Burt, and now would never see either of the brothers again, though she knew she'd never forget them. They were both imprinted on her heart forever.

Getting up, she picked her jump rope off the chair beside her and went to get some exercise. Maybe she could sweat the brothers out of her mind, if only for awhile.

In less than 10 mintues a friend will be here to pick me up... oh oh she's early... gotta run.
