My Mom and one sister have Dell desktop computers and are happy with them. There are some ways that desktops are better than laptops, but I love the freedom and mobility of having the laptop, as well as the fact that it's so much smaller so doesn't take up so much room in the home.
Dell has the Laptop 17", and I personally like the larger screen on this size of laptop. Check out their student laptop. With Dell you can choose which components you want in your computer; how much memory, which hard drive, the graphics card, etc., and you can even choose the color of your laptop. How cool is that!
