Photo Hunter #9- ART

I’ve given a lot of thought to what I would post for “Art”. I always try to keep my posts original and interesting, so when I thought of taking photos of the art on my walls, it didn’t quite thrill me, though some are paintings by my late aunt, Mary Earl, a successful, professional painter in her day. I even thought of taking some pics of my friend Art, if he’d agree to it… but decided against that too. Hmmm… what to do, what to do.

I was in the shower this morning when it hit me. Take photos of some of the murals (all depicting the history in this area) around the nearby city of Vernon. Now those are art! So I drove around taking shots of several of them. There are 27 in all, so I didn’t take photos of all of them… just way too many to post in one day, haha. I even decided against posting all the ones I did take.

The murals were done by teams of artists, of which, on most of the murals, Michelle Loughery was the lead artist.

If you know much about me, you'll understand why this is my favorite one. I love animals, I'm a horse person (ride western), my Dad broke horses for a living during the depression of the 1930s, I grew up on a farm with cows and horses as well as other animals. Oh ya, and I really like "cowboys", especially in tight Wrangler jeans. :o)

I just "had" to give you some close-ups of this building. This is one of the walls, in the back alley.

This wall is on the street side of the bank. You've really got to love the detail in all these works of art.

Further down that same wall. Notice, just past this cowboy, half way through his horse, there's a doorway (well, yes, there's a doorway before the cowboy too, but I draw your attention to the second doorway, haha...

And here is that second doorway.

This building has two sides painted with murals, but I decided not to post the photo of the other side because it is a war memorial and I would rather promote PEACE. Note the newspaper headline in this one... it says "PEACE". I like that. They are showing the end of war, and I support the idea of ending all wars, replacing them with World Peace.
This is actually two murals you are looking at here. One on the ground level, and one on a wall that is upstairs and set back quite a ways from this outer wall.

This is a closeup of one window on the upstairs mural. This was just a blank wall with no windows or anything until the artist transformed it, as were most of the walls these murals are on. You can see which ones had real windows, and on many you can see (if you look closely) that they were just concrete block walls before.

And a closeup of one part of the downstairs mural.

I love this one. It looks like you're seeing it through a big hole in the wall. It's an orchard scene. The little boy that you see standing there looking at the mural is... also part of the mural, haha.

A modern day car parked in front of a mural of people with their "horseless carriages".

The post office is the building this mural is painted on. It shows the Canadian flag and people of many nationalities, all living in Peace.

In this one, you can see the windows in the building. What history this mural depicts. My Dad worked on the railroad for many years, but not so long ago that the engines looked like this one.

Two people and lots of writing. What more can one say, haha.

I was in the park today too, on another mission and saw the skateboard park. Some might think it art, so I thought I’d include just one shot of it.

I've done a lot of work on this project... now it's your turn :o) If you have a Photo Hunters post up, please leave a link to it on Mr. Linky below. Everyone, with or without a PH post, please leave a comment. (Pay me with your praise... LOL)

Edits:
- I just noticed I'm in one of the photos... can you find me? An extra little scavenger hunt for you, haha.
- I'm adding a new link. This is so you can see Montserrat's post for today... also murals.
- Hootin' Anni' linked to my post so people could come here and see these murals. I really appreciate that, and am honored that she liked the post enough to do that. Hootin' Anni' also has a very good post with a collection of interesting art work.

June 3 - I was just looking again at the orchard scene and realized that it is a mural within the mural. It's amazing with some of these how, if you take the time to study them, you keep finding things you didn't see before.

Those are absolutely superb! And how they transform the buildings!

They remind me of some murals I saw in Montpellier, but of course, typically, we had forgotten our camera.

Someone has done a lot of work in your town! Very impressive!

I especially like the one that has the "little boy" in front of it looking in.

I'm afraid I would be totally distracted driving around your town because I'd want to be looking at all the buildings and not the road!

Those are absolutely incredible. How cool to live in a town that values art that much to display it proudly on all of it's buildings.

those are great examples of art. i'm glad someone put up some 'tag-art' ... not many people see the beauty in that... but that really is truly an art form as well. :-)

AND!!!!!!!! Are you perhaps the 'girl' behind the camera in the pickup truck? A reflection?

Thanks so much for sharing these! They are amazing. My favorite, of course, are the western cowboy scenes. My husband is a Wrangler man. :D Need I say more?

I've linked to your site from my post.

Wow, awesome paintings - some of them look really authentic. The skateboard park - in our nearby park they've set up a wall that's there just for the graffitis! I think it's a clever idea. The kids have a place where they're allowed to do their stuff, so they don't need to smudge houses and bridges. Sometimes, tho, the air by the wall is so thick of the paint fumes that it's impossible to breathe... Just wondering how much brain these kids have left when (if) they finally grow up?

Great post you had here. And indeed, it has required a lot of work from you.

Wow, I think this may be the longest Photo Hunt blog post I've ever read and looked at. But so worth it. Wonderful murals. Thanks for bringing them to my/our attention! :)

Although a photo of "Art" would have made me smile..I do not know anyone with that name!, I have thoroughly enjoyed the murals around your city. I did not even think of that as I could have done the same thing...we have a lot around our town too, but with different themes. It is interesting how the theme of the city shows through in the murals.

Those are amazing. My favorite one, though, is the one where the artist created a window where there wasn't one before.

Thank you for visiting Pollywog Creek and commenting on my father's masterpiece. Hope you are having a delightful weekend.

These are GREAT! Some really talented artists at work here - they're really stunning. I hadn't noticed the mural in the mural in the orchard mural until you mentioned it but sure enough there it is. And there you are in your truck taking the picture of wagon wheel doorway.

Perfect choice for The Hunt!

These are some really cool murals--I love seeing things like this in our travels (we've moved A LOT!)

Peace is good, but it's not cheap, and it's not free.
