Wow, it sure is cold out there all of a sudden. The TV news and the Environment Canada web site both say that todays high was 2 degrees Celsius, though just before 3pm I looked at my thermometer and it said about 4 1/2 degrees, so guess it's warmer here than it is wherever they take the temps for the official count. And the Environment Canada web site says it's currently -7, but when I was outside a few minutes ago my thermometer said -2. I must admit I am wondering about the accuracy of my thermometer. It sure felt cold out there anyway, in my night gown and bare feet.
My pellet stove for some reason isn't working quite right. The fire keeps going out. So tonight the natural gas furnace keeps kicking in. This is a good thing that it does kick in and keep the place from getting too cold, though I don't want to run the furnace too much as it gets fairly pricey, and I already bought 3 tons of pellets for the stove which should get me through most of the winter. Also, I had almost 1/2 a ton left from last winter, so that's lots of pellets. I just turned the auger up to 3 and the fan up too, so hopefully it will keep running now. It has been working well for the most part, but now wants to pull this stuff. Not good.
Yesterday I picked up some straw that a lady didn't want any more. She got my number from a fellow I know and called to see if I wanted the straw as he'd said I have rabbits. I used to raise rabbits but only have one left now, but I took it for in the chicken house anyway. I spread some around in there last night and they sure seemed to like scratching in it. I never worried about giving them any before as they had a dirt floor, but now they have a wood floor, so need something like that in there. I am sure glad I got the little shed cleaned out and the chooks moved over into there before this cold weather hit. I've always had them in the lean-to before and it only has chicken wire walls that I tarped in the fall. I think this will be much warmer and more comfortable for them than that was. The rabbit is outside in her cage and I know she would be just fine where she is, protected from the elements and warm in her fur coat and the nest box, but I've decided I want to bring her in. I need help to do this though, as her cage is heavy and it has to go down the steps in order to open the door then back up the steps and into the house. Her cage is on the landing behind the storm door as it opens. Sigh... another picture I need to take, lol. I'll have to get Dan or someone to come over soon and help.
The outside water tap has not been dealt with yet either, so is a concern with such cold temps. Dan had said he'd go under my home and shut it off for me, but so far hasn't. He's said not to worry as it wasn't going to get very cold anyway... ya right. I may have to try to get under there myself, which I am not looking forward to. Once before (last winter I think it was) he didn't shut it off for me as he'd said he would and the pipe burst. I don't want that happening again. Also my new hose is out there full of ice now. So many things I wanted to get done and just haven't gotten to... so many things, so little time. Oh well... and now I'm going to bed so I can get up and do so many more things tomorrow. One will be to do something about the outside water and the hose.

It's cold here, too. And I was fantasizing about moving your way for the warmth!
Well, Madcap, during the course of the winter we usually are warmer here than anywhere else in the country, so you may still want to fantasize :o) Cold is a relative term, isn't it. Right now, after hot temps of the summer, 4 degrees feels so cold! And yet, at some point in the winter we will start to see 4 degrees as warm and balmy. Go figure... LOL.
