ABC Wednesday

I must confess that I very nearly forgot that today is ABC Wednesday. There is so much happening in my life that it just slipped my little mind, lol. Oh well, I remember now, so here goes.

Today, the letter is E.

E is for....

ELLEN!!

My friend Shannon promised me one of her baby budgie birds some time ago, when she took a female budgie I had here, to mate her with a male. It's been awhile, but finally I got that baby the other day. I'm not sure if that baby is male or female, it's too soon to be sure, but I think it is a male (you tell by the amount of color in the cere). Shannon has a lot of different birds, and gets a lot of babies. She doesn't put them for sale, but gives them to people for free, usually over Freecycle. Anyway, I decided to name the baby Chirp, a name for male or female.

So, what about Ellen? Where does Ellen come in? Ellen is Chirp's mother, and Shannon asked me if I'd like to take her too. I thought a day or two, then decided yes, I'd take Ellen too.

Tomas was widowed nearly a year ago when Lady Bird died from egg binding. He has been alone in his cage ever since, and is just so happy to have other budgie birds in the cage with him. He is very taken with Ellen, and I think she is rather liking him too. Oh wow... I'm watching them as I type and they are being very kissy faced with each other. Yup, I'd say they're bonding big time. So cool.

I tried to get some shots of just Ellen by herself, but no luck.
The green & yellow is Tomas, the blue & white is Ellen.

Think they like each other?

Notice the band above Tomas's beak? That is the cere. See how much color is in it? Look at Ellen's cere in the top photo and notice how pale, nearly white it is. With budgie birds, that is how to tell the gender of the bird.

Now, some photos of Chirp:

Notice the cere. See how it has some color, but not much. You can see why it's hard to tell with a bird this young if it's male or female.

The birdies are so cute and lovable and adorable. And I learned so much.

Birdie love! How sweet. They are both pretty birds. I bet they'd make a lovely baby.

Ahw, that is sweet. They are lovely birds. Did not know about the cere. You learn something every day here in Blogland ;-)

What lovely budgies! You certainly have a houseful of different pets--do they all get along? The cats in our house love to watch the birds outside, but I'm not sure what they'd do if we had indoor birds as well:)

What an absolutely delightful post! I love budgies, but I can't have them here. Yours are beautiful, and I hope Tomas and Ellen will have many happy years together.
