This is a close-up shot of the carpet where it was underneath furniture most of the 18+ years it was in this home. It was very nice when I bought and moved into this place in the fall of 1990.
And this is where the carpet was not protected by furniture. This is 'out in the middle' of the living room. As you can see, it was dirty and stained and ugly (to say the least), holding little to no resemblance to 'the early years'. It was cleaned many times until cleaning didn't seem to do anything for it anymore. 18+ years of me and my animals took their tole. For the last few years, I've kept this part of the floor covered up with area rugs to hide the stains.
When pulling out the carpet & underlay, bits of the original carpet came to light from under walls. Isn't it pretty? (gag) Whoever created shag carpet, especially orange or red shag carpet, will pay for it in the after life. (Okay, so I don't believe that, but better than what I was about to say they should be shot with).
The first few feet of the new laminate flooring down, Dec. 16 before Dan went away for the holidays.
Here's Dan putting down the last few feet of the living room laminate flooring. Well, actually just ripped out the last of the carpet & underlay, is 'prepping' the floor for the laminate. Notice the missing chunks of wall paper. There is more damage higher up... as I found out, this is part of having a parrot, sheeeesh. She has a liking for removing wall paper from the walls. I ended up ripping that area of the wall all down to the wood paneling last night, removed every bit of wallpaper. It's a start. I don't care for the wood paneling, but better than the ripped wallpaper. Walls are another project for another time.
The furniture is not properly placed yet, and until I get some felt things for bottom of legs (today) there are bits of unusable laminate under the legs to protect the floor.
I am looking forward to having my desk moved from the back room into the living room so my work area will be on the other end of the room and hopefully much more organized that it is now. Laptop and books, papers all looking messy in this photo. You also see the budgie cage by the TV/VCR/DVD, and on the left side Mewsic in her scratch post, my arm chair, DW's parrot cage... and other 'stuff'.
I am really loving this new flooring, except I see every little bit of dirt and pet hair on it. Where I could ignore what I really didn't see on the carpet, I keep having to sweep this floor 4 or 5 times a day. It could well drive me crazy!!
I figure that with the carpet gone with all its toxins, it will be much healthier in here than it was, though there is still much dirt etc to get rid of. A lot of work left to do, yet a wonderful start on it all.

Yeah, not having carpet is healthier, but one does spend a lot more time sweeping floors. I got a light way floor vac and we used it in the condo. I just gave everything a quick zip once a day, then only damp (not wet) mopped once per week with the recommended ($$$) floor cleaner.
well done on getting your new flooring in. it'll be a lot easier to keep clean, you just have to ignore the dust four times and sweep once not five! I could do with hoovering my carpet now that I look......maybe later!
Alice, thanks for posting a comment for me to drop back and see the finished floor!! It is absolutely beautiful. So bright and warm at the same time. I bet you love it.
