Alcoholism is a disease that is not limited to the "rummy" living on the streets of "Skid Row" in some distant city, drinking his booze out of a brown paper bag. Nor is it exclusive to any one race, or any one age of people. Indeed, alcoholism can effect anyone. Alcoholism is in your town, that's pretty much a given in this day and age. There could be an alcoholic in your church, in your country club, in your neighborhood. There my even be an alcoholic where you work. None of those would be a big surprise to most of you, would it. What about your family? Yes, there could be an alcoholic tight there in your very family! I know there is in mine.

One place I used to work, my fellow employee and friend, Jack, was a definite alcoholic. Jack would come to work sober and ready to do the job for weeks on end. He even was the one that taught me how to do what needed to be done when I first became employed with the company, selling mobile homes. Jack never drank a drop during those weeks. Then would come a day that Jack didn't show up for work, then another day, and another, followed by more. Eventually when he did return to work he was many pounds lighter and looked very sick. His alcoholism expressed itself in binges. He would lock himself in his home (never drove his car after the first drink until it was all over again) and did nothing but drink until he passed out. When he woke up he drank again. When he ran out of booze he phoned the local taxi to bring him more... until the money ran out and he had no choice but to stop drinking. During this time he never ate any food, and he would be too drunk to go to the washroom, just wet himself where he was and wore the clothes he was in until sober again. Jack passed away about 8 years ago now.
