Manic Monday - CLICK

Okay, I know I said I would write something for this post in the morning, after I had a good nights sleep... then as I was doing the last of my "critter chores" my mind began to play with this challenge... to play with the work CLICK and a few possible scenarios for it. I thought of the clicking sound of the weights returning to their place as I work out on the machines at the gym, but decided against it. Coming up with another idea I thought I would just jot down a few words so in the morning I could take up where I'd left off. Well, the rest is history, and is a compilation of truth and fiction. Hope you like it.... and now I'm wide awake, drat!

Click, click, click…. The sound roused her from the depth of her sleep. As she opened one eye and saw the numbers on her alarm clock, she knew she had only been sleeping for just under an hour. Click, click, click… “Reba, lay down and go to sleep!” she hissed at her dog; a large, shiny coated rottweiler whose toe nails were clicking on the tile of her floors. Once the dog was settled, the woman snuggled back under the covers and into her pillows, sighed and began to slip back into the realm of dreamland.

Click, click…. Her eyes popped open. Now what? She lay quietly in the pitch black of the night, listening. Click, click… ever so quietly. “Dam!” she muttered under her breath, shoving the sleeping tom cat off the bed as she whispers to him, “Wake up, you lazy thing. There’s a mouse in the house, and it’s chewing on something. Go get rid of it! You’re here to do more than hold my covers down, you know.”

She lay there, quieting her mind so she could slip back into sleep, finally accomplishing her goal.

“CRUNCH, crunch, crunch… CRUNCH, crunch, crunch…,” from under the bed, brings her back to wakefulness. “Not again! Oh well, at least he caught the mouse, but I do wish he would eat it somewhere else, or at least more quietly”, she thinks to herself as her consciousness slips away once again.

CLICK, CLICK, CLICK!!! “Now what?” she mutters as she slips from her bed. In the full dark of night she slowly, carefully makes her way down the windowless hallway, knowing that windows would do no good even if they were there. It was just as dark outside as it was within tonight, with clouds covering the moon and the rain steadily falling. CLICK, CLICK, CLICK!!! Soundlessly she makes her way through the kitchen. “Sure is a good thing I know my way through this house”, she thinks to herself as she reaches back to touch Reba’s muzzle as the dog follows, inches behind her mistress. CLICK, CLICK, CLICK!!! The woman and the dog silently slip into the living room from where the sound is coming, thankful for the small amount of illumination coming through the window from the neighbor’s big yard light. CLICK, CLICK, CLICK!!! “Oh, you darn noisy chinchillas. How did you manage to get that food dish down off the side of your cage? And why are you clicking it against the wire? Don’t you know I have to get some sleep tonight?” She reaches into the cage with her right hand, scratches both Cherry and Charley Chinchilla under their chins and behind their cute round ears. “Darn nocturnal critters,” you can hear the love in her voice. The woman rights the dish in the cage, makes sure all else is in its proper place, slides her hand once more over the soft, furry little bodies of the young animals, then securely closes and hooks the door. “Now all the rest of you be quiet and let me get some sleep,” she softly admonishes the other 3 chinchillas, the rabbit, 2 budgie birds, 1 Bantam chick, and 3 Betta fish as she leaves the living room where all these pets are housed. “Come Reba, let’s go back to bed.”

The woman manages to cross the kitchen and walk back down the hallway again, only tripping over something once, and stubbing her toe another time. “Drat! Stupid animals” she mutters, knowing that if she hadn’t had to get up to investigate the clicking noises, she wouldn’t have hurt herself in the dark… and also knowing it really was her own fault for not keeping the house more tidy. Safely back in the bedroom, she climbs back into the bed, digging her way back under the covers and the sleeping cat, reaches out and pets the dog one last time, then snuggles down into her pillows. “Ahhh, finally!” In a feeling of total peace and comfort she drifts back into unconsciousness, back into the land of her dreams.

Click, click, click….BRRRRIIIIINNNNNGGGG!!!!!!

“NO!!!” she shouts as she grabs up the ringing alarm clock and throws it across the room, smashing it to bits against the far wall. “No!” she said again, more quietly this time, as she snuggles back into the pillows and returns to the loving embrace of her dreamland lover.

Ha,ha, ha poor girl ! I have four times four paws clicking on the floor during night sometimes ! Not together, each time when I am half asleep. You are lucky that your fishes didn't click against the acquarium ! Cat Lisa this morning at 4 am (!!) didn't click her paws but she bite in my nose to wake me up !

Morning Alice:
I really enjoyed reading about your "clicking" adventures. A very good way to begin another day in the deep south.
Even though I come by here often this is my first "hello." You have really done an amazing thing with your blog. Lots of interesting things to discover and read about.
I will return soon. Enjoy the spring thaw and Earth Mother's awakening.

Blessings,
Barbara, mE

Oh, wow. I'm glad that story isn't all true. All that clicking would drive me nuts! :-)

lol, lol, lol...

i wake up several times during the night it seems. ...the lapping noises from my dog deciding to groom herself as she lays right beside me but on the floor, a cat deciding to settle down on my back, the dog needing out, the cats chasing each other through the house, the dog finding a favorite toy and tossing it around, the gentle snores of my husband, the friggin alarm clock, etc...
..these don't happen always during the same night, but sometimes they do...lol

here's to no more clicking noises for the next few nights....
mayhaps you should wear ear plugs. i've thought about that myself..lol

Great story - I could 'see' it and was right there with you all the way... you have a nice way of making me curious, without scaring the pants off me in the dark hallway! Perhaps part of it was Reba'reassuring presence.

AND, I love the names Charley and Cherry Chinchilla :)

I enjoyed that. You built some wonderful tension as the woman creeps down the hallway. I wasn't sure what would happen. Then I laughed with relief that it was the chincillas.

Well done!
